Fighting Acne with Grapefruit
Grapefruit is one of the most cultivated citrus fruit in the world. Citrus fruits are known to be rich in vitamins and minerals that can greatly help in getting rid of skin diseases. It has been used as an ingredient in many skincare products especially the ones for acne cure. The fruit itself is very edible but then some people find its taste to be so tart. The flavor is not exactly suitable for every palate. What are these vitamins and minerals exactly? And how can they give you a healthy skin? Here is a list:
- Grapefruit is rich in vitamins A, B and C which are all beneficial for skin health. Vitamin A keeps your pores clear and reduces oil production. The B complex vitamins helps in relieving anxiety and stress. Stress and anxiety is known to create hormonal imbalance which causes acne breakouts. Vitamin C boosts our immune system. The immune system produces inflammatory chemicals that destroy the acne-causing bacteria. Poor diet and digestion are also major causes of acne. Grapefruit is rich in fiber that helps with problems on diet and digestion.
- It is high in water content. This keeps your skin hydrated and wrinkle-free. Instead of using products that can leave your skin dry, use the ones with grapefruit extract. Excessive oil is one main cause of acne but the skin still needs to be moisturized. When the skin is too dry, the sebaceous glands tends to produce more oil to replace the loss.
- Grapefruit balances the skin’s pH. Hormonal acne is also common especially for teens and females. When hormones go wild, so does acne. By eating grapefruit, your hormones are controlled. Acne breakouts is lessened then.
- With its antioxidants, grapefruit is good for fighting free radicals. A certain bacteria called P. acnes is the main culprit of acne but then acne can also be lessened by protecting our skin from the dirt in our surroundings. This avoids clogging and increases oxygen in our pores. Bacteria breeds slower in an environment abundant with oxygen.
A great reminder for those who are taking medications: consult your doctors first. Grapefruit extract can counteract some drug effects. There are also some medicines that react badly even with a small hint of grapefruit. This can sometimes be dangerous to your health. So keep in mind to go to your doctors first before using any products with grapefruit extract or before eating a grapefruit.
